Paris, France – Saturday is a day of many unknowns. That was how the French newspaper Le Monde described it as France braced for possible nationwide demonstrations bringing together high school students, trade unions and “yellow vest” activists. The protests began in mid-September at a high school in the Paris suburb of Creteil, where students took to the streets over dilapidated buildings, overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages and what they see as a deeply unequal education system. Enhanced silicate weathering on the South Yellow Sea shelf during glacial periods and its influence on the glacial carbon cycle - EurekAlert!
image: (a) During glacial periods, sea level fell, and the loosely exposed sediments on the shelf underwent significantly enhanced silicate weathering. (b) During interglacial periods, sea level rose and the river mouth retreated landward; fine-grained materials were rapidly transported into the sea, reducing the time and space available for sediment reweathering. This study is led by Associate Researcher Zhang Jin (first author) and Researcher Wan Shiming (corresponding author) from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with Tongji University, University College London, and other institutions. They identified a marked difference between glacial and interglacial periods, with silicate weathering carbon consumption rates being significantly higher during glacial periods, and proposed that the mid-latitude shelf region was an underestimated active silicate weathering carbon sink during glacial periods.
