1. 49ers (last week No. 3; 4-0): Take that, substation.2. Chiefs (No. 2; 4-0): They need help at receiver, badly.3. Jaguars (No. 5; 3-1): The Jaguars have the best shot at winning the No. 1 seed in the AFC.4. Bills (No. 1; 3-1): The benefited from getting early-season wins against teams that aren’t as good as most thought they’d be.5. Seahawks (No. 6; 3-1): Let Rashid cook.

6. Broncos (No. 4; 2-2): The Davis Webb problem isn’t going away. 7. Rams (No. 8; 2-2): It shouldn’t have been as hard as it was in Philly.8. Vikings (No. 9; 4-0): Kyler Murray is no longer the Road Runner.9. Bears (No. 10; 3-1): Kyle Monangai may be emerging as the best tailback option. 10. Ravens (No. 12; 3-1): They’ll need Lamar Jackson back sooner than later.11. Raiders (No. 15; 3-1): Even though they lost, the Raiders must be regarded as a contender.12. Browns (No. 18; 3-1): The Browns may soon be saying, “The Steelers is the Steelers.”13. Patriots (No. 20; 2-2): Drake Maye was under more pressure than anyone in Week 4, and he delivered.14. Steelers (No. 13; 2-2): The best-case scenario is 9-8. The worst-case scenario is they’re giving Will Howard or Drew Allar game reps after Thanksgiving.15.

I’ve got a problem when it comes to guessing who’ll win the standalone games. Basically, I currently suck. For the games that had the stage to themselves in Week 4, I was 0-4. Fortunately, I was otherwise 10-2. And a final result of 10-6 is better than the Week 3 mark of 8-8. But every week is a clean slate. A new opportunity to turn 0-0 into something that isn’t embarrassing. For the year, I’m 37-27. Which is good, but far from great. At least it’s not horrible, which is mainly what I’m trying to avoid. The best pick for Week 4 was the 49ers over the Broncos. Worst pick: Lions over Panthers. Flew too close to the sun on wings of pastrami pick: Saints over Falcons. My seat-of-the-pants prognostications for all 15 of the Week 5 appear below, one wild-ass guess at a time. (The Panthers and Chiefs are off, as the bye weeks begin.)Buccaneers at Cowboys (Thursday night)Could undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels make a big splash in prime time? Yes, especially if the Cowboys take the Buccaneers too lightly. Every Tampa loss has come in a one-score game. If the Bucs can withstand the early onslaught, they have a chance.

Maybe it’s good that I’m no longer doing the Joint Mega Picks Podcast. From 10-6 to 9-7 to 8-8, the trend is not my friend. (For the season, I’m 27-21.)In Week 3, the best pick was Ravens over Cowboys (especially since the wild-guess score prediction was 34-30). Worst pick: Buccaneers over Vikings. Flew too close to the sun on wings of pastrami pick: Bengals over Steelers, based on the erroneous conclusion that Pittsburgh’s find-a-way magic dried up when Mike Tomlin left town. But each week brings another opportunity to land closer to 16-0 than 0-16. Hopefully, this year’s weekly one-game slide won’t result in 7-9. Steelers at Browns (Thursday night) The Steelers have gone 1-7 in Cleveland since 2018. To make matters worse, the Steelers are 0-9 in Thursday night games against AFC North rivals. What better way to turn the page on the recent past than to go to Cleveland and find a way to win? Aaron Rodgers will need to get his 42-year-old body ready to go on a short week, and the Steelers will need to play well on both sides of the ball. Browns coach Todd Monken has plenty of experience against the Steelers, given his time with the Ravens.
