Penguin Colony review - the least expected Soulslike you'll play, and a cracking parody of Lovecraftian empires

Penguin Colony is probably the best pisstake of Lovecraft and Lovecraftian horror I've played. It's the best because it places Lovecraft's universe at a creaturely remove, amplifying its absurdity without having to drop any punchlines. Entering a ravaged polar campsite, I advance among burning tents and uniformed corpses to a pioneer seated on a crate, who is busily sawing his own face off. Ice and snow shrill overhead and Lenval Brown's narration rumbles in my bones, speaking of eldritch relics and unquenchable ambitions, of "queer creatures" and inexplicable deaths, of madness and glory, of "scientific explanations" and empires from other dimensions. I consider all this, and say: Fnaaarp.
Another man standing at the top of a pile of sandbags catches my attention. I waddle up to him and his head explodes, emitting a gory spark that resolves into the word "sex". I regard the body gravely and say: urk urk urk. Then I flop on my belly and slither out of camp, chasing the whistling wires of the wind. For I am a penguin. These creatures, their flags, their words and their elder gods mean little to me.

What we've been playing - "I simply didn't know if a first-person shooter could work as a Soulslike"
A few of the things that have us hooked this week. Hello and welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little about the games we've been playing. This week, Connor plays a classic, and ticks it off his bucket list; Sherif isn't sure about a first-person shooter foray into Soulslikes; Matt visits a South Pacific island volcano and Jim Henson's Labyrinth, all in one game; and Bertie discovers that playing D&D with kids is enormously entertaining.

This island was home to the planet’s largest penguin colony. Here’s why it just lost that title - CP24
Published: October 07, 2026 at 8:39p.m. EDTAn uninhabited volcanic island in the Southern Ocean used to be home to the largest penguin colony in the world — but not anymore. Scientists have discovered the staggering loss of more than half a million chinstrap penguins from the isolated outcrop. Chinstrap penguins, named for the narrow band of black feathers under their chins, thrive in harsh locations and Zavodovski Island fits the bill perfectly. Part of the South Sandwich Islands archipelago north of Antarctica, the island is wild, craggy and windswept. Zavodovski is home to both chinstraps and macaroni penguins, which have distinctive yellow feather plumes on their heads. In 2011, it was named the largest penguin colony in the world, but when British Antarctic Survey researchers travelled to the island in 2023, they found the chinstraps had suffered huge declines. Battlefield 6 Devs Respond After Players Take Aim at 'Secuty' Typo and Cosmetic With 5 Pistols
Updated: Oct 17, 2026 9:28pm UTCThe Battlefield 6 team has responded after players took aim at a few controversial cosmetics added in Season 5. Battlefield Studios took to its official Discord server to offer background information on two skins that caused a stir with the launch of Battlefield 6 Season 5 this past week (via MP1st). The full text confirmed at least one of the issues has a fix in the works, while the other will seemingly remain the same. The cosmetics – one with what appeared to be a typo in the word "security" and another featuring infantry sporting a whopping five pistol holsters – were officially added October 13 and almost immediately drew ire from fans. It's that pesky misspelling, which took the shape of the non-existent word "security" on the armband of a McNeil skin, that the developers say will be fixed when Battlefield 6 Season 5 launches in November. Secuty 😭 It's AI #Battlefield6 https://t.co/8DVphghCSU— Battlefield Intel (@BattlefieldInte) October 13, 2026 "You called it out clearly, and we hear your concerns," the message, acknowledging the memes and conversations surrounding the new skins, said.

The Mortuary Assistant Film Director Jeremiah Kipp Passes Away
Underground horror director Jeremiah Kipp has passed away, according to his partner Lindsay Katt. Confirmed through The Long Island International Film Expo, Kipp released his largest movie just earlier in the year, an adaptation of the hit indie horror game The Mortuary Assistant. “Jeremiah was a gentle soul who was always generous with advice and sharing his knowledge of cinema,” writes the Film Expo, “he leaves behind many friends and an important legacy.” Based on the 2022 video game, The Mortuary Assistant follows Rebecca (Kingdom Heart’s Willa Holland), a down on her luck woman hoping her new job will pave the road to recovery. Working grim but seemingly benign shifts at the morgue, she suddenly finds herself subject to strange visions. That’s when her employer, Raymond (Boardwalk Empire’s Paul Sparks), delivers the bad news. It seems a demonic spirit hitched a ride on one of the cadavers, and Rebecca will need to follow specific rituals to rid herself of the entity. 15 years ago Jeremiah Kipp made my dreams come true. I had a very dark and personal story about Suicide and he believed it needed to to be told. I got to write and produce "Crestfallen" as a film along side him.
