There are many varieties of spurtle. The traditional Scottish cooking implement, designed for stirring porridge without forming lumps, comes in a range of sizes, can be formed from cherry wood, beech, or maple, and might be topped with a decorative finial or smoothed out at its end for a more modern finish. But on Saturday in Carrbridge, in the Scottish Highlands, only one spurtle mattered: the Golden Spurtle, awarded annually to the winner of the World Porridge Making championship, which have been hosted here since 1994. The day began with a pipe band parade through Carrbridge and a toast to the porridge at the village hall. Photograph: Murdo MacLeod/The GuardianThe sun shone on the picturesque village as almost 40 competitors lined up in the village hall for six heats across the day. Tasked with producing a traditional porridge – made only from untreated oatmeal, water and salt – and a speciality dish where additional ingredients and flourishes were permitted, entrants had travelled from across Scotland and as far afield as Australia and the US for a shot at the Golden Spurtle. Josh Kettleson from the US, who reached the finals.

From hunger to hope: Lettie's story on World Porridge Day - Vatican News

As the international community marks World Porridge Day on 10 October, the story of a young Malawian woman whose life was transformed by a daily school meal offers a reflection on the importance of school feeding programmes in the fight against hunger. Through the documentary Lettie, Mary's Meals revisits a story first told more than a decade ago, tracing one woman's journey from childhood hunger to hope. When Mary's Meals first met Leticia, known to many as Lettie, she was 11 years old. Recently orphaned and hungry, she had been forced to leave school and care for her two younger brothers. Her story was first shared in Child 31, the award-winning 2012 documentary that introduced audiences around the world to the reality of child hunger in Malawi. Now, more than a decade later, Mary's Meals has returned to Lettie's story.

Israeli settlers attack European diplomats during West Bank olive harvest - Al Jazeera

Israeli settlers have attacked European diplomats, including a French mayor, near the Palestinian village of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank. The delegation was visiting Palestinian olive harvesters on Saturday when the Israeli attackers confronted the group. The attack comes a day after settlers assaulted a US journalist north of Ramallah. In Saturday’s incident, the settlers targeted Belgium’s consul general, French and Polish diplomats and Catholic representatives, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said. “A French mayor was assaulted and a Belgian vehicle damaged,” Prevot said, linking the attack to what he called Israel’s “illegal settlement policy” and pledging to push for further European Union sanctions. French mayor Bernard Baudoux, who was assaulted, told the AFP news agency that the violence suggests that “there is a tolerance on the part of the Israeli government” towards settler violence. Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah, said the settlers surrounded the diplomats’ vehicles, pelted them with stones and smashed their windows.
