Slow TV, the Norwegian experiment that turned long journeys into global entertainment - Yahoo

Television is usually designed to move quickly, with dramatic stories, fast editing, and constant entertainment. Norway created something completely different. Instead of rushing viewers from one moment to another, Norwegian Broadcasting Company introduced a new style of programming that allowed audiences to experience real journeys and everyday activities in their entirety. This unusual format became known as Slow TV. The idea behind Slow TV is simple: show an event from beginning to end with an uninterrupted timeline. Rather than cutting between scenes or shortening the experience, viewers are invited to watch the complete journey as it naturally happens. The movement began in 2009 with a surprising experiment. Thomas Hellum, a project manager at the Norwegian Broadcasting Company, and his colleagues were discussing ideas for programs based on experiences that naturally take a long time. During one conversation, someone suggested filming an entire train journey across Norway. The idea was straightforward: record the complete train trip from Oslo to Bergen and broadcast the entire seven-hour journey live.
