Stampeders keep playoff hopes alive with win over Lions - TSN

CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders didn't know if they were done for the year after their regular-season finale in the CFL. They avoided elimination from playoff contention with a 32-13 victory over the visiting B. C. Lions on Saturday, but will spend a few days in football limbo during a season-ending bye week awaiting the outcome of next Friday's game between the Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-9) to know their fate. Calgary (9-9) needs the team they just beat to defeat the Blue Bombers, which would vault the Stampeders into the post-season picture. It's an awkward head space for Stampeder coaches and players to be in as they have zero influence over their playoff chances now, and must depend on a divisional rival to do them a favour. "It's a little awkward," concurred Calgary's quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. "We could have helped ourselves out earlier in the year. You can't go back on it. It is what it is. We're just going to sit back and see what happens. "The Edmonton Elks (13-4) secured first in the West Division with Friday's win over the Blue Bombers, which also allowed the Lions (10-7) to clinch second. The Elks will host the division final Nov.

Horvat, Islanders hand Maple Leafs third straight loss - TSN

TORONTO — Bo Horvat scored the winner and added an assist as the New York Islanders cruised past the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 on Saturday night. Simon Holmstrom with two, including one into the empty net, and Anthony Duclair had the other goals for New York (4-3-1). Ilya Sorokin made 28 saves. Colton Sissons replied for Toronto (3-4-2). Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 16 shots for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped three straight games, and four of their last five. The Islanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 8:18 of the first period when Duclair took a pass in the slot and changed the angle before firing through a partial screen on Bobrovsky. Coming off a hat trick in Thursday’s 5-4 home shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres, Maple Leafs winger Kirill Marchenko had a couple of chances that Sorokin turned aside in the second. No. 1 overall pick Gavin McKenna, who was benched for the second half of Thursday’s contest, had an opportunity to tie things late in the period on a partial breakaway, but fired high and wide. The Islanders raced the other way, with Horvat eventually beating Bobrovsky at 18:33 to double the visitors’ lead.
