Being A "Fangirl" Used To Scare Me, But The Anime Community Has Changed My Life - Refinery29

Photo via @angelinebarion. Fangirls (and fandoms in general) are changing the entertainment industry as we know it. They’re shaping stories, dictating marketing and changing the trajectory of franchises by speaking up about things they love most. After the live-action Sonic's animation style was criticised by fans online, Paramount and Sega scrambled to change it. That's the impact fans can have. But growing up, being seen as a fangirl felt too vulnerable. I can’t remember being a vocal, diehard fan of anything from the ages of 14 to 24 — which also happens to be peak fangirl age. 14-year-old me was so adamant about pursuing a "cool girl" image that she never realised the belonging, friendship, and community she was so desperate for were tucked between all the interests she never admitted to having. She didn’t understand that the "cool girl" doesn’t have defining parameters. She simply makes her own. In the past two years, my admiration has only grown for people who say that they love something (fan-mantically) with their entire chest. Now, I’m in the same boat, and I wouldn’t change a thing. All it took was a trial by fire to overcome my fear of being a fangirl.

James Cameron congratulates Avengers: Endgame's box office success with bonkers image - A.V. Club

Marvel Studios’ release of Avengers: Endgame: Encore was a shrewd gambit for a few reasons: It put the studio’s most successful film back in conversation right after the juggernaut success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day; it tided die-hards over with new footage ahead of December’s Avengers: Doomsday; and, perhaps most importantly, it raked in an additional $138 million for the film, reinstating its position as the worldwide box office champion over James Cameron’s Avatar. Cameron, who certainly doesn’t spend his precious time fretting about such matters as lifetime financial grosses and being the best in the world at stuff, recently expressed his congratulations to Marvel for once again overtaking his 2009 sci-fi film. “You are one of the people,” the director wrote (per The Wrap) in a composite image from Avatar, with Iron Man at the center of a welcoming Na’vi tribe. “Congratulations to Marvel and the #1 Avengers: Endgame: Encore for bringing moviegoers to the cinemas! – Jim Cameron.”
