“You can run really fast and then have a 20-minute break, or you could run slow and have a one-minute break,” Harder said.

“The idea is you run as fast or as slow as you want. You just have to get the 6.7 kilometres done every hour and be ready to go the next hour.”The race continues until runners are eliminated by failing to complete a loop in the allotted time, choosing to stop or, ultimately, until one runner remains. The math adds up quickly. Completing 24 loops means running 160.8 kilometres, or 100 miles. Harder’s 42-loop performance in Lethbridge amounted to about 281 kilometres, or 175 miles, and was enough to place him among the top qualifying performances during the two-year qualification period. The world team championship is held every two years, alternating with an individual world championship. For the team event, each country has up to 15 runners. The athletes start their loops at the same time, with each country’s total number of completed loops added together at the end. “The team with the highest total loops around is the world team championship, or world team champion,” Harder said.

Canada gets ready for World Backyard Ultra Champs - Canadian Running Magazine

Fifteen Canadian runners will line up in Sicamous, B. C., on Saturday morning with no finish line and no set distance ahead of them. The 2026 Backyard Ultra World Team Championships begin Oct. 17, with national teams racing at the same time in locations around the world. Canada’s team will compete on the BC Backyard Ultra course in Sicamous, while runners from 73 other countries start their own races simultaneously. “Team Canada is hungry, healthy and ready to go,” team director Kara Leinweber told Canadian Running. “We have a great mix of experienced backyard athletes who have competed at Nationals before and fresh faces bringing new energy.” Leinweber says the team has lots to give. “I believe this group hasn’t come close to reaching their ceiling, and I’m excited to see just how far they can push themselves and each other.”

Israeli settlers attack European diplomats during West Bank olive harvest - Al Jazeera

Israeli settlers have attacked European diplomats, including a French mayor, near the Palestinian village of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank. The delegation was visiting Palestinian olive harvesters on Saturday when the Israeli attackers confronted the group. The attack comes a day after settlers assaulted a US journalist north of Ramallah. In Saturday’s incident, the settlers targeted Belgium’s consul general, French and Polish diplomats and Catholic representatives, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said. “A French mayor was assaulted and a Belgian vehicle damaged,” Prevot said, linking the attack to what he called Israel’s “illegal settlement policy” and pledging to push for further European Union sanctions. French mayor Bernard Baudoux, who was assaulted, told the AFP news agency that the violence suggests that “there is a tolerance on the part of the Israeli government” towards settler violence. Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah, said the settlers surrounded the diplomats’ vehicles, pelted them with stones and smashed their windows.
