Over the weekend, NASA's Perseverance rover set a new off-world milestone, as it broke all previous records for farthest distance ever travelled on another planetary body in our solar system. Since 1970, humans have sent nine different robotic rovers to trundle around on other celestial bodies — four to the Moon and five to Mars. The three smallest, including NASA's Sojourner Mars rover and China's Yutu and Yutu 2 lunar rovers, barely drove a distance of 100 metres in total, each, before their missions ended. Meanwhile, Lunokhod 1 and 2, sent by the Soviets to the Moon in the early 1970s, made it significantly farther. Lunokhod 1 drove over 10 kilometres, and Lunokhod 2 set a record in 1973 that held for decades, with a total distance of 39 kilometres. This infographic illustrates the distances driven by various rovers on the surface of the Moon and Mars — 3 human-driven and 9 robotic. Each distance is the final mission distance, or in the cases of Perseverance and Curiosity, their distances driven as of Oct. 11, 2026. (NASA/JPL-Caltech)NASA's Opportunity rover finally broke that record, in 2014, after 10 years on the Martian surface.

Webb Measures Distance to Farthest Fast Radio Burst, Suggesting Origin - NASA Science (.gov)

First discovered in 2007, fast radio bursts are enigmatic, millisecond-long flashes of radio emission from the distant universe. Their origin remains uncertain, particularly since most are seen once and never again. Astronomers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have pinpointed the host galaxy of the most distant fast radio burst (FRB) seen to date. Their finding has implications for what kind of energetic event creates these bursts. “What makes fast radio bursts interesting is that we don't know what generates them. We have theories for what objects produce them, but we don't have conclusive proof,” said Manisha Caleb of the University of Sydney, lead author on the study published Thursday in the journal Science.

Israeli settlers attack European diplomats during West Bank olive harvest - Al Jazeera

Israeli settlers have attacked European diplomats, including a French mayor, near the Palestinian village of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank. The delegation was visiting Palestinian olive harvesters on Saturday when the Israeli attackers confronted the group. The attack comes a day after settlers assaulted a US journalist north of Ramallah. In Saturday’s incident, the settlers targeted Belgium’s consul general, French and Polish diplomats and Catholic representatives, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said. “A French mayor was assaulted and a Belgian vehicle damaged,” Prevot said, linking the attack to what he called Israel’s “illegal settlement policy” and pledging to push for further European Union sanctions. French mayor Bernard Baudoux, who was assaulted, told the AFP news agency that the violence suggests that “there is a tolerance on the part of the Israeli government” towards settler violence. Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah, said the settlers surrounded the diplomats’ vehicles, pelted them with stones and smashed their windows.

Map Reveals Where Drought To Worsen As El Niño To Shape Winter - Newsweek

Drought conditions could develop or worsen for parts of the northwestern U. S. in the coming months, as meteorologists expect El Niño to help shape the winter season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued its winter outlook this week. In it, the agency outlined how the climate pattern could influence temperature and rainfall during winter and said drought conditions are favored to develop or worsen across parts of the northern Rockies. What Is El Niño? El Niño is a naturally recurring climate pattern associated with warmer waters in the Pacific that can influence temperatures and rainfall worldwide. In the U. S., typical El Niño effects can include stormier weather across southern regions, drier conditions in some northern areas and changes in hurricane activity. The Climate Prediction Center said earlier this month that El Niño had continued to strengthen, with chances remaining high for a “strong-to-very strong” event through January to March 2027.
