Lyle Odelein, a loving husband, father, and faithful friend, passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 3, 2026. He was 58. Known as “Odie” to his countless friends and loved ones, Lyle made his professional mark on the National Hockey League, playing for eight franchises over 17 seasons in a league where the average career lasts barely four years.
Off the ice, there was no better friend than Odie. He would literally give you the shirt off his back, and he never met a stranger. He didn’t have any sense of entitlement or arrogance; he was humble and grateful. Odie’s magnetic warmth and contagious sense of humor left an indelible mark on all who met him. He loved telling stories of his exploits in the NHL, laughing out loud when recounting the famous scraps he had with the likes of Probert, Domi, and Barnaby. True to form, even the opponents he fought on the ice loved and respected Odie off the ice. He was impossible not to admire.

Canadiens Lyle Odelein and 1993 Stanley Cup champion, dies at 58 - TheSuburban.com
Lyle Odelein, the hard-nosed defenceman who spent the first seven seasons of his NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens and helped the franchise win its most recent Stanley Cup, has died at the age of 58. Odelein died Friday, Oct. 2, 2026. The Canadiens confirmed his death Saturday, with the organization offering its condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. A native of Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, Odelein was never a player who needed to score to make his presence felt. Drafted by Montreal in the seventh round, 141st overall, in the 1986 NHL Draft, he developed into one of the league's most imposing and physical defencemen during a 16-year career. He played 420 regular-season games with the Canadiens between 1990 and 1996, recording 20 goals and 75 assists for 95 points. But it was his toughness that became his trademark. Odelein accumulated 1,357 penalty minutes with Montreal, the second-highest total in franchise history, and led the Canadiens in penalty minutes in each of his six seasons with the club. The defining moment of Odelein's Montreal career came in the spring of 1993.
