Why Trump is likely to join Saudi war against Houthis - Responsible Statecraft

For myriad obvious reasons, President Donald Trump has so far resisted calls from Saudi Arabia to assist in its fight with the Houthis, even as the militant group has been striking — literally — at the heart of the Kingdom's oil and tourism industries all week. First, the U. S. can hardly afford another front in its current Middle East war. We know Pentagon munitions stockpiles are depleted, and our main asset in the region, the U. S. Navy, is stretched thin trying to manage its blockade against Iran and helping to shuttle non-sanctioned shipping through the Strait of Hormuz (which is not going as well as the White House was boasting a week ago). Second, politically, Trump cannot afford to launch another war ahead of the midterms, especially if it is not guaranteed to be successful. His first escalation against the Houthis in 2025 failed, and he was forced to call a ceasefire. The Yemeni resistance group, also known as Ansar Allah, has only gotten stronger since. But the pressure is on, and Annelle Sheline, research fellow at the Quincy Institute's Middle East program, says it is likely that Trump will be forced to get involved sooner than later.

Israeli settlers attack European diplomats during West Bank olive harvest - Al Jazeera

Israeli settlers have attacked European diplomats, including a French mayor, near the Palestinian village of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank. The delegation was visiting Palestinian olive harvesters on Saturday when the Israeli attackers confronted the group. The attack comes a day after settlers assaulted a US journalist north of Ramallah. In Saturday’s incident, the settlers targeted Belgium’s consul general, French and Polish diplomats and Catholic representatives, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said. “A French mayor was assaulted and a Belgian vehicle damaged,” Prevot said, linking the attack to what he called Israel’s “illegal settlement policy” and pledging to push for further European Union sanctions. French mayor Bernard Baudoux, who was assaulted, told the AFP news agency that the violence suggests that “there is a tolerance on the part of the Israeli government” towards settler violence. Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah, said the settlers surrounded the diplomats’ vehicles, pelted them with stones and smashed their windows.
