Indo-Pacific Outlook 2026 (Vol. 2) | APF Canada - Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada

At the time of writing, the Iran War is not over. Ceasefire terms have been agreed, abandoned, and contested again, and the fighting has not stopped. The war’s significance, though, was settled early: this was the first war in which the most militarily powerful state in the international system compressed its entire decision-making cycle, from tactics to strategy, through artificial intelligence (AI) decision support. AI had been used in earlier conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, but what was demonstrated in this case differs in kind — a shift comparable to the English longbow at Agincourt in 1415 or predicted fire at Cambrai in 1917. The age of AI war has begun. The greatest change of this age lies in speed. Past a certain tempo, speed does not merely accelerate the same process; it changes the process. This paper advances the hypothesis that the revolution in speed is itself a central reason the war has not ended.
