Rolex and gold were for US and not Trump, Swiss trade chief says - The Straits Times

ROME – Gifts presented to President Donald Trump by Swiss executives were actually for the American people, according to Bern’s top trade diplomat. In an interview on Oct 14 at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, Secretary of State and head of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs Helene Budliger Artieda told Francine Lacqua that handing over a Rolex table clock and engraved gold bar at the White House was not illegal. “It’s a gift to the American people – it’s duly registered at the White House, and if all things go well, it will end up in a presidential library,” she said. “It’s a private-sector initiative, but I feel confident that they have kept within the margins of the law.” The items delivered in the Oval Office last November by a business delegation seeking relief from Trump’s onerous tariffs became a matter of national controversy in Switzerland. Lawmakers filed criminal complaints seeking a probe for possible bribery, and a parliamentary report on the matter is expected in due course. “I’ve been assured by these business leaders that they had their compliance look into it,” Budliger said. “The Swiss government didn’t gift anything.

Class Action in Rough Halifax Plane Landing Certified in Supreme Court - VOCM

The Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador has certified a class action on behalf of passengers on board Air Canada Flight AC 2259 which landed hard at Halifax in December of 2025 after the plane’s landing gear collapsed. The flight had taken off from St. John’s International earlier that evening, and officials at YYT later confirmed that debris was found on one of its runways after the flight took off. They wouldn’t say at the time whether the discovery was related to the incident at Halifax. The class action names Air Canada, Provincial Aerospace Ltd, St. John’s International Airport Authority and the Halifax International Airport Authority, all of whom have consented to certification. Stephen Barnes of Bob Buckingham Law says they want to understand what went wrong that night and make sure that passengers have an opportunity to be fairly compensated for what they went through. The case will examine whether the defendants met their responsibilities for aircraft safety, runway safety and emergency response, and whether any failures caused injury or loss to passengers.
