Developing and benchmarking one health genomic surveillance tools for influenza A virus in wastewater - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractInfluenza A viruses (IAV) remain a persistent One Health threat, and whole-genome sequencing from wastewater offers a promising surveillance tool. However, IAV is at low abundance in wastewater, making it difficult to sequence. We benchmark four targeted enrichment methods suited for multi-subtype whole-genome IAV sequencing including custom and off-the-shelf methods. Our custom HA tiled-amplicon panel is sensitive, fast, and cost-effective, making it suitable for monitoring low-abundance seasonal variants of known subtypes, although its reliance on conserved and intact primer-binding sites limits primer design to fewer subtypes. A published universal amplicon method targets all IAV subtypes but performs poorly in wastewater due to its reliance on intact genome segments. Meanwhile, probe-capture methods are resilient to RNA degradation.

Addressing gaps in health care - UMToday

Film and panel highlight need for communication and collaboration in interprofessional care. Over 360 health care and social work students attended a screening of the film Falling Through the Cracks: Greg’s Story on Oct. 5.  The moving 30-minute film was made in 2017 and follows the true story of Greg Price, an Alberta man who died at the age of 32 from an undiagnosed blood clot as a complication from testicular cancer. The Price family has held screenings at UM annually in the fall term for the past few years, either with panel discussions or students discussing the film in breakout groups. Hosted by the Office of Interprofessional Collaboration at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, the film was screened at the Frederic Gaspard Theatre on Bannatyne campus, as well as online for nursing students at Fort Garry campus and at the University College of the North (UCN) in The Pas and Thompson.  In total, 134 medical students attended, along with 124 nursing students (UM and UCN), 61 pharmacy students, 40 respiratory therapy students and 10 students from the Faculty of Social Work.

Data & Business Process Services Stocks Q2 Results: Benchmarking SS&C (NASDAQ:SSNC) - The Globe and Mail

The end of the earnings season is always a good time to take a step back and see who shined (and who didn’t). Let’s take a look at how data & business process services stocks fared in Q2, starting with SS&C (NASDAQ:SSNC). A combination of increasing reliance on data and analytics across various industries and the desire for cost efficiency through outsourcing could mean that companies in this space gain. As functions such as payroll, HR, and credit risk assessment rely on more digitization, key players in the data & business process services industry could see increased demand. On the other hand, the sector faces headwinds from growing regulatory scrutiny on data privacy and security, with laws like GDPR and evolving U. S. regulations potentially limiting data collection and monetization strategies. Additionally, rising cyber threats pose risks to firms handling sensitive personal and financial information, creating outsized headline risk when things go wrong in this area. The 10 data & business process services stocks we track reported a mixed Q2. As a group, revenues beat analysts’ consensus estimates by 1.9% while next quarter’s revenue guidance was 3.1% below.
