After 11 years on an H-1B visa, I still miss my family back home. Here’s why I stay in the US. - Business Insider

Abhradeep Chatterjee and his wife moved to the US together 11 years ago; he's been on an H-1B since. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Abhradeep Chatterjee, 37, an Indian national who lives in Minnesota. The following has been edited for length and clarity. I was young and newly married when I came to the US from India in 2015. I didn't imagine I'd still be here 11 years later. I came for the opportunity to grow. The Indian multinational company I'd been working for, Tata Consultancy Services, sent me to New Jersey on an assignment. I continued building a career in the US on the H-1B visa, and the country has challenged me professionally in ways I couldn't have imagined when I arrived. But it's all been on a temporary visa. The uncertainty has been difficult.

How a loophole in Canada's species-at-risk law can leave wildlife in limbo - CBC

A species can be assessed as endangered in Canada and still spend years waiting for Ottawa to decide whether to protect it — while the habitat it needs to survive keeps changing. A new study found that of 288 species assessed as at risk since 2017, just 17 reached the Governor in Council — the federal cabinet body that makes the final listing decision — within the recommended timeline. Another 153 — more than half — were overdue and still waiting as of Jan. 25, 2025. That includes populations of caribou, beluga whales and lake sturgeon that have been assessed as endangered or threatened while they wait for listing decisions that can trigger habitat protections and a recovery plan. The researchers say the bottleneck falls in a gap in the Species at Risk Act (SARA). Ottawa has recommended timelines for moving assessments forward, but no statutory deadline for one crucial stage of the process. The study doesn't say why the delays happen. Critics say the gap allows governments to put off tough choices between conservation and economic interests. Peter Thompson, a postdoctoral researcher in biology at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.
