75 years on, fans recall watching and listening to 'The Shot Heard 'Round the World' - MLB.com

Illustration by Ben Marra / MLB.com On Oct. 3, 1951 -- 75 years ago tomorrow -- Jerry Austin was in the second grade at P. S. 75 in the South Bronx, counting the minutes until he could run from the classroom. The night before, he had seen a headline about a big game that would air on TV. That “big game” was the Brooklyn Dodgers taking on the New York Giants in the third and final game of a tiebreaker playoff for the National League pennant. There was only one problem: “We didn’t have a TV,” Austin told MLB.com. “I didn’t know anybody who had a TV. My mother or father then said, ‘There’s a TV at the five-and-dime on Westchester Avenue.’” Though he had first been taken on a trip to the Polo Grounds by his father a few years before, Austin was young enough that he didn’t quite understand what this contest was really all about. He just knew it was something important and he wanted to be a part of it. “When school ends, I run to the five-and-dime, which is in the complete opposite direction from where I lived, because I heard they had a small TV to see this big event,” Austin recalled.

Israeli settlers attack European diplomats during West Bank olive harvest - Al Jazeera

Israeli settlers have attacked European diplomats, including a French mayor, near the Palestinian village of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank. The delegation was visiting Palestinian olive harvesters on Saturday when the Israeli attackers confronted the group. The attack comes a day after settlers assaulted a US journalist north of Ramallah. In Saturday’s incident, the settlers targeted Belgium’s consul general, French and Polish diplomats and Catholic representatives, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said. “A French mayor was assaulted and a Belgian vehicle damaged,” Prevot said, linking the attack to what he called Israel’s “illegal settlement policy” and pledging to push for further European Union sanctions. French mayor Bernard Baudoux, who was assaulted, told the AFP news agency that the violence suggests that “there is a tolerance on the part of the Israeli government” towards settler violence. Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah, said the settlers surrounded the diplomats’ vehicles, pelted them with stones and smashed their windows.

Ilhan Omar’s lawyers demand the return of property seized in house raid - Al Jazeera

Omar’s legal team says the search violated safeguards designed to protect constitutional rights of members of Congress. Lawyers for Democratic United States Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota have demanded the return of property seized in a federal raid of her Washington, DC home, accusing the US Department of Justice of conducting a politically motivated investigation and failing to follow judicial instructions during the search. “The political motivations behind this pre-election investigation and search are clear as day,” Omar’s lawyers wrote in a letter sent to federal prosecutors on Friday and obtained by The Associated Press news agency.
