Description

From Alberta’s expansion of private-pay models, to British Columbia’s reversal of harm reduction and decriminalization measures amid an ongoing public health emergency, to Quebec’s handling of tuberculosis outbreaks in Inuit communities, and Ontario’s cuts to funding for long-term care — recent provincial decisions raise concerns among healthcare advocates about the direction of health policy across the country. The federal government faces growing pressure to respond. When provinces introduce policies that may conflict with federal health laws, national standards, or evidence-based approaches to care, what role does — or should — the federal government play? Brishti Basu, Health Reporter at PressProgress, hosted a virtual panel discussion on July 15, 2026 featuring leading healthcare workers and advocates from across Canada: Chris Gallaway – Friends of Medicare Dr. Ryan Herriot – Doctors for Safer Drug Policy Andrew Longhurst – Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Dr. Yassen Tcholakov – Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Service Together, these speakers addressed some of the policies affecting their communities, where provincial decisions may conflict with broader healthcare obligations, what federal intervention could look like, and what’s at stake for the future of healthcare in Canada.
