Description
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly is rejecting an accusation by U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra that Canada might be interfering in the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. In a recent interview with a Canadian podcast, Mr. Hoekstra referenced the actions of several Canadian politicians, including Ms. Joly, and said the U.S. is “closely watching Canadian activities” right now. “It appears that some of this – from our perspective, in the way we view our elections – could be inferred to be election interference,” the U.S. ambassador told The Really Big Show. At a Globe and Mail event on Wednesday focused on national defence, Ms. Joly said Canada is not interfering in U.S. politics, and said it’s “absolutely not” fair of Mr. Hoekstra to suggest that. Ms. Joly was also asked by Ottawa bureau chief Mercedes Stephenson about the country's procurement of F-35 jets. Canada’s plan to purchase a fleet of American fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets has been under a review for more than a year. Prime Minister Mark Carney put the full order of 88 jets under review in March, 2025 in response to the ongoing trade war started by U.S. President Donald Trump. #canada #unitedstates #cdnpoli Subscribe to The Globe and Mail's Morning Update to get stories directly in your inbox: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/newsletters/subscribe-morning-update/
